Alignment of Equals Math with Alberta Program of Studies

These grade-level alignments are a reference that teachers can use in their instructional planning. When students are working on specific grade-level outcomes from the program of studies, some students, particularly students with significant disabilties, may need parallel types of learning activities that are more structured, more concrete or less complex. Most outcomes from the the Grade 1 - 6 Mathematics Program of Studies can be addressed through one or more lessons in the Equals Math resource---these alignment documents show these relationships. Using this alignment for planning will enhance a teachers' ability to differentiate mathematics instruction as well as provide increased opportunities for students with disabilties to participate in meaningful learning experiences to develop numeracy, similar to their same-age peers.

AbleNet Equals Math Canadian Edition


Equals is a teacher resource for educators who work with students with significant disabilities.
It encompasses:
  • pre-readiness math skills (attending, cause and effect, etc.),
  • fundamental math skills (numbers and operations, measurement, and estimation), and
  • higher order math skills (data analysis, probability, spatial sense, geometry, algebra, and problem solving).
Each lesson provides three levels of instruction for students with mild, moderate, and severe disabilities. The resource comes with over 100 manipulatives, vocabulary cards, and other hands-on materials.

Tools to Support the Use of Technology in the Classroom

AbleNet's Action Dictionary


The action dictionary by AlbeNet is a collection of verb or action words referred to as 'power words'. Power words include and engage students in meaningful activities. A print copy is provided within EqualsMath. You can also download this free resource in iBook itunesformat which can only be read on a iOS device .

Stylus and headphone jack


A stylus allows students with fine motor difficulties to interact more accurately with the tablet. Teachers can make their own stylus using these step-by-step instructions.

A headphone jack allows multiple headsets for one computer so that a single computer can become a learning centre for two to five students. The use of headphones reduces ambient noise for the participating students and lets them listen to the audio without disturbrng other students in the classroom.
